Demonstrations have become alternative ways to express displeasure or dissatisfaction among Kenyan students in institution of higher learning.
Nairobi University tops the list perhaps leading in the sub-sahara Africa in as far as staging demonstrations is concerned.
Barely three months go before the students are out in the streets throwing stones to innocent motorists for one reason or another. There were even calls one time to relocate the main campus away from Nairobi CBD due to rampant demonstrations that leave motorists and businessmen on the defensive.
However, a recent demo at the university ignited by disputed students' election has left many speaking after a video showing GSU officers brutally beating up students who had surrendered went viral.
Considering that Kiambu County is home to some of the biggest universities in Kenya namely Kenyatta, JKUAT, MKU to name a few, how do you avoid such a ruthless police beating during a school demo?
First, do not even think of calling for a demonstration if the ultimate thing is to surrender and end up being beaten up like stray dogs. Conveners of demonstrations and those who attend should know that demos are not for the faint hearted as they are likely to rub the authorities the wrong way.
When you come into direct confrontation with the Police moreso the GSU, run like you are running for an IAAF championship trophy.
Those who know the GSU well will agree that these officers live to their so called 'toa fujo uone'. Ensure to have a bottle of water in hand to tacke the effects of a teargas.
Finally, ensure to have a phone with a camera or a video recorder in case of an ugly incident by the enforcers. Such a video will be fodder to human rights groups, media and so on. In case your demo had turned violent, all will be forgotten and the focus will be on the enforcers' brutality.
