Engaging in positive activities can boost your motivation to cope with stress. It could be exercising, sporting activities, catching a movie, playing chess, or any hobbies that best excite you.

It's important to avoid the temptation to mask the pain. Processing it will ensure that once you deal with it, you overcome. Pushing issues inside or piling them up is unhealthy. It must come out somehow! Only that then you won't be in control. It could lead to picking up poor habits or irrational behaviour. 

We have to admit that situations like diseases that are hard to beat, can be overwhelming. A supportive family can make the painful moments easier.
