Most people in Nakuru and especially the young turn to white-collar jobs despite knowing that this is one sector that is overpopulated, forcing most employers to cut down on their employees so as to maximise on their profit.

Nakuru is no exception as most businesses are forced to close shop, an example is the EverReady Company which closed shop in 2014. About 100 employees were affected.

According to the firm which had operated in Nakuru for over 47 years, it was no longer profitable due to the increase in counterfeits and cheap imports which reduced its market share.

Though the company set out Sh110 million for the layoffs, it took a while before the affected staff got their money. How did most of them survive after being laid off considering it was their only source of income?

Another example is when Telkom Kenya started retrenching its 400 workers in 2011. Some of those who were affected formed part of its workforce in its branch in Nakuru.

During their working days, most of them earned a salary just like any regular employed person which is not enough to sustain their needs.

So, it is only logical to say that most of them had only one job, that is at Telkom Kenya, and the retrenchment news came as a surprise.

Though all the staff members at Telkom were taken through some courses to educate them on life after retrenchment and how to use the package, some were still not ready for the move since this was their only source of income.

However, it is now time for all those who are employed in Nakuru to think outside the box. It is no longer possible to survive on one source of income. However, most people will question themselves on how to go about it.

To answer this question, here are some methods one may use to earn extra income in Nakuru.

1) Online writing

Various sites on the internet offer this service with HiviSasa.com being one of them. This is an easy way to earn extra income without much hustle. This is one area that most people can explore.

2) A little business on the side

A story on HiviSasa.com by Annabel Amoit dated January 30, 2016, in reference to a lady called Jackline Achieng  who makes over Sh30,000 from selling smokies and roasting groundnuts should act as a reference point to all those who idle around in Nakuru town claiming to have no jobs and those who want to earn extra income. This is a business that one can easily start. It does not have to be on the streets. One can easily cook smokies at her home then sell them to friends at the workplace. It’s called killing two birds with one stone.

3) Selling clothes

This is another business that may easily earn one extra money. All you need is a little capital to buy the clothes. These clothes can be bought from markets in Nakuru at a very cheap price and after being cleaned and ironed, they can in turn be sold at a higher price. One can sell these clothes online so as to avoid using more money to hire a shop that one can use. A person who yearns to start this business can store the clothes at her home and advertise them via social sites, They can then deliver them at a common point.

4) Hair business

This is a form of extra cash especially if you tap career ladies who do not have time to visit the salons because of their busy schedules. All you have to do is to visit them at their homes where you can plait their hair. You can agree on the time this can be done. By this, a person who is employed can work then have those who want to be plaited book an appointment with you during the weekends.

These are some of the ways that Nakuru people can use to earn extra income because in this day and age, it s no longer wise to depend on one source of income.
