Since her heydays as the industrial town, Thika has grown tremendously over the past few years with many estates sprouting in the town's outskirts.
This has necessitated the need for an efficient transport system to help ferry residents from the estates to the town's CBD and vice-versa. We focus on some of the matatus involved in ferrying residents within the vast town.
2TS Sacco/Thika Town Sacco
These are all 14-seater matatus which are mainly involved in ferrying passengers from almost all Thika estates to the town center and vice versa.
It is the biggest and notable Sacco in the town so far and anybody traveling to any of Thika estates would probably travel with matatus from this Sacco.
However, apart from that, the matatus are everywhere within the town and the estates to take you to your desired destination, there is nothing else to write home about these matatus.
The matatus are one of the oldest, rickety and the most unroadworthy in the town. They are notorious for overloading passengers and their adherence to traffic rules is wanting if not completely lacking.
The matatu conductors are also known not to be so water-friendly and when it comes to giving back your change, they can be a hard nut to crack. You have to keep on 'pestering' them along the way.
254 Finest Sacco matatus
They are popularly known as 'Nganya' or 'Magari ya Murengo'. They ferry passengers to estates that lie along Thika road.
And as the nickname 'nganya' would have it, they are new, trendy and don't overload. They are a favorite among young people but loathed by the yester-years generation.
They play ear-shattering music that you find hard to withstand. However, you will find warning stickers in some of them like, 'If the music is too loud, you are too old for it". That shuts you up in case you wanted to complain about the loud music.
They also have a young crew who bad-mouths the passengers who try to complain about any issue. And as they have also come to be nicknamed, 'magari ya murengo', they are fond of cutting the journey short at the middle and give you to other matatus to get you to your destination.
