If you've experienced an extremely stressful or disturbing event that's left you feeling helpless and emotionally out of control, you may have been traumatized.

Psychological trauma can leave you struggling with upsetting emotions, memories and anxiety that won't go away. It can also leave you feeling numb, disconnected and unable to trust other people. But with these self help strategies and support, you can speed up your recovery. They include:

Get moving. Trauma disrupts your body's natural equilibrium, freezing you in a state hyper arousal and fear. Due to this one is unable to think straight or even perform any activity. Take part in such activities such as playing sports, long walks or even running. This way one becomes distracted and is able to carry out his or her activities easily.

Don't isolate. Following a traumatic experience, one may want to withdraw from others but isolation only makes matters worse. Connect with others face to face will aid in healing, so make an effort to maintain your relationships. It may be meeting new people or even focusing on the ones you have. Avoid spending too much time alone.

Self regulate your nervous system. It is important to know that no matter how agitated, anxious or out of control one feels you can change your arousal system and calm yourself. Not only does it help relieve ones anxiety but it also engenders a greater sense of control.
