Insomnia can keep you awake for hours, even at night. [Photo/previews.123rf.com]Sleeping disorders have a way of interfering with both your day and night. They hold dangers like poor attention due to sleepiness, fatigue, car accidents because of sleeping on the wheel and work-related accidents.
This is the most common type of sleeping disorder. It's an inability to fall asleep or stay asleep as one would require and desire. The quality of sleep is quite poor. Causes include depression, apnea and physical pain or illness.
Insomnia is more common among the elderly.
Avoid engaging in vigorous activities at night. Rather, let your body slow down. Complement this by being active during the day so you can be plenty tired and ready for rest at night.
Do not engage in stimulants like caffeine when it's almost time for bed. Lay off the cigarettes too. Refrain from activities that are too far from resting in the bedroom. If you carry some workload home, ensure you settle it hours before bedtime.
Some people pop the sleeping pill which helps them falls asleep. The downside, however, is that it can lead to dependency or abuse. A specialist can always advise you on how to handle it best.
