The County Government of Uasin Gishu on Monday joined the rest of the world in marking the Menstruation Hygiene Day in Kesses Sub County, with the County’s First Lady Lucy Mandago officiating the day seeking to amass resources to help the girl child’s education.
The Menstrual Hygiene Day is an annual awareness marked on May 28 of every year, to highlight the importance of good menstrual hygiene management.
The day is being celebrated for the fourth year now, with more than 400 partner-organizations working towards creating awareness on menstrual hygiene management (MHM), as part of the initiative by WASH United (water, sanitation, hygiene).
The First Lady distributed over 10,000 pieces of sanitary towels to school girls. Most school going girls have often had to skip school days during their monthly periods, for fear of stigma that may be caused by lack of proper sanitary gear.
Speaking during the event Mrs. Mandago noted that the County Government through Department of Health Services in collaboration with that of Education has organized health education sessions in schools to educate girls on the importance of menstrual hygiene and demystify menstruation in a bid to fight stigma and discrimination associated with menses.
County Executive in charge of Health Services, Mrs. Everlyne Rotich flanked by Executives from other departments urged parents to be supportive of their girls and pay close attention to their needs so as to ensure they don’t lag behind as far as education is concerned.
