Kenya had a disappointing start managing only seven medals and trailing at position 18th.

Kinyamal won the tough 800metres race and gave a sigh of relief to Kenyans who had been anticipating for the gold.

It has been a tough event for Kenyan athletes who have sadly failed to live up to their reputation of dominating medal standings.

Before the start of 800metres race at about 3 pm,  some Uasin Gishu residents gathered at Horizon restaurant in Annex estate on the outskirts of Eldoret town to watch the race which has been considered a Kenya race if history is anything to go by.

The race started and the spectators could not hold back onto their seats instead stood up to cheer up for their athletes.

It was really a tough one but fortunately, Wycliffe Kinyamal managed to hold off a superb finishing by England's Kyle Langford who finished up near second while Luke Mathews finished third to win a bronze.

This is what the residents had to say after the race;

"I thank God because our athletes managed to win a gold medal. I was worried as the athletes were juniors in the competition unlike legendaries like David Rudisha and Ferguson Rotich," said one of the locals who identified himself as Kimtai.

"I knew this is our race, I was sure we will win. Kinyamal has done us proud," added a happily looking Cornell.

A jovial Alfred could not hide his joy after the emphatic win, "unfortunately, Kitilit did not win the race but we are delighted we have bagged our first gold through Kinyamal."

Despite the dismal performance among the athletes in the games at the Gold Coast, locals are optimistic that more medals are in the pipeline.
