President Uhuru Kenyatta will today (Tuesday) start his vote-hunting mission in the six Mt Kenya counties, amid fallouts occasioned by the Jubilee nominations, where some of his close political allies who lost are now running as independents.
As observed in Kiambu County on Sunday where some residents who turned up at various trading centres in the county during UhuRuto’s campaign trail defied President Kenyatta’s six-piece voting plea, the same is expected to play out in these counties.
In Murang'a County for instance, where the President is scheduled to start his tour, the rivalry between senatorial candidates Irungu Kang'ata of Jubilee and Senator Kembi Gitura who is vying as independent, will be an interesting thing to watch.
The youthful Kang'ata floored Gitura, a former envoy, two-time Kiharu MP and Jubilee insider. However, Gitura says he was rigged out during the primaries and is fighting tooth and nail to retain his seat.
In Nyeri, disagreements have already cropped up on whether the President should endorse Jubilee ticket holders or not.
Mathira MP candidate Wambura Maranga urge President Kenyatta not to campaign for Jubilee candidates. But Kieni MP Kanini Kega says it was only natural that the President would do what Mr Maraga was uncomfortable with.
In Embu, a showdown is expected between Governor Martin Wambora of Jubilee and Senator Lenny Kivuti who decamped from Jubilee to Maendeleo Chap Chap ahead of the nominations. Both gubernatorial candidates are close Jubilee associates.
In Meru, the rivalry between Governor Peter Munya and Senator Kiraitu Murungi will be on display as Kenyatta tours the county at the weekend.
Finally in Kirinyaga, where former Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru is facing off with Narc-K leader Martha Karua, a showdown between the two 'iron ladies' cannot go unnoticed. Waiguru has of late been accusing Karua of riding on the popularity of the President to win support.
