Students from nearby colleges in Kisii Town including Jomo Kenyatta, Mt Kenya, Gusii institute, Nairobi aviation among others have found it secure to rent houses in Mwembe.

Kisii University alone admitted over 3000 fresh students this year which increased the high demand for housing in the nearby estate.

Some of the students say they prefer Mwembe to other places.

"Renting a house here is quite affordable and it is secure," said Linda Nyakweba, a Kisii University student.

"It is also near to the main campus since I do not need to board a vehicle to take me there," added Nyakweba.

The security in the estate has attracted not only students but also businessmen and women. A number of retail shops have succeeded in meeting the needs of the population.

There is a flood light at the centre of the estate which lights up the area. As a result, businesses close at around 10pm as opposed to previously where they closed at 8pm.
