Margaret Kenyatta is best known for her beyond zero efforts and the glamorous look she often spots during official national duty with her husband.
Margaret Wanjiru Gakuo was born on 8 April 1964, she is the daughter of Dr Ephantus Njuguna Gakuo. Gakuo was the first African managing director of Kenya Railways after taking over from GPG Mackay in 1964.
He graduated with a PhD in Economics from Freiberg University in Germany in 1960 and also taught in Germany for a year before coming back to Kenya.
Njuguna Gakuo married Magdalena, a German, who later became Margaret's mother.
Margaret went to St Andrews School (Molo) where she met her boyfriend President Uhuru Kenyatta who later become her husband.
She is an alumnus of Kianda School and has been admired for her simplicity in regards to her nature, dressing and manner.
Margaret and Uhuru married in 1989 at the Holy Family Basilica, Nairobi.
Together they have three children; Jaba, Jomo and Ngina.
The late Njuguna Gakuo died in August 2005.
Margaret has one brother called Maina Gakuo.
Since Uhuru was elected president, the first lady has been running the Beyond Zero campaign that aims at reducing child and maternal mortality rates.
She also organises the annual First Lady marathon, an event that raises funds for Beyond Zero.
Margaret was named UN Person of the Year on October 24, 2014.
