Did you know that the first formal settlement in Kibera was by Nubians?
And did you know how the community ended up settling in the area even though they trace their roots to the western side of Sudan?
The Sudanese soldiers from Darfur were used by the British in WW2 but after completion of the war they were settled in the area in Nairobi's outskirts.
This was just as Kenya was approaching independence.
Other soldiers were settled in Uganda.
As they settled in Nairobi, the area was under dense vegetation and the soldiers called it Kibra, a jungle or forest in the Nubian language.
It was in the later years other communities moved into the area and renamed it Kibera.
