A human rights lobby is calling for speedy investigations into Wednesday’s shooting incident in Busia County in which three people among them a 12-year-old girl were allegedly shot dead by AP officers.
Africa researcher at Human Rights Watch Otsieno Namwaya said Thursday the National Police Service and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority should immediately launch investigations into the incident and the officers who will be found culpable held to account.
“Kenyan authorities should urgently investigate allegations that security officers killed at least three people, including a high school student and injured others during demonstrations in Butula centre, Busia county. Police officers found to have unnecessarily used lethal force should be held to account,” said as qouted by Capitalfm.co.ke
Seven other people sustained injuries, the report adds.
According to Capitalfm.co.ke, witnesses said the two were killed when police officers who had been deployed to quell the riots opened fire on irate residents who had threatened to set an AP camp on fire.
Officers from the camp are alleged to have killed the two watchmen during a robbery that occurred at Bumula trading centre.
The schoolgirl was killed on the spot while the middle-aged man died as he was undergoing treatment at a local hospital.
An ODM ward representative Josephat Wandera condemned the killing of the watchmen and that of the middle-aged man and schoolgirl.
