Human influence on climate is increasing the risks from some extreme events like flooding being witnessed across the country, a civil society group has said.

East African Sustainability Network chief executive officer Norbert Nyandire says the country cannot assume that the extreme events are natural occurrences.

Nyandire said human activities in water catchment areas contribute heavily to flooding.

He said forest cover in the area has been wiped out and that gives room for rain water to flow freely causing havoc on its way.

Nyandire said the invasion of wetlands in the lowland areas are also a major factor for flooding in areas like Nyando where flooding has left a trail of destruction to crops and homesteads.

He added that preserving and restoring wetlands is the surest way to control flooding in downstream areas.

Speaking in Kisumu during a public forum on climate change on Tuesday, Nyandire said the government has to implement laws and policies geared towards protecting the environment.

He said there are good policies that have come out of parliament that need to be implemented to make the country an environmental friendly place to live in.
