[Photo: standardmedia.co.ke]Drunk driving and overspeeding have been cited as some of the major causes of frequent road accidents along the Salgaa blackspot.National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) deputy director of safety strategy Duncan Kibogong on Monday said that the authority had observed recklessness and disregard for traffic rules on the part of drivers, a situation he said was making it hard to contain road carnage."In as much as the road is quite steep and lacks clear markings, human error is equally to blame for the increased carnage. Drivers need to learn to respect the traffic rules. Freewheeling, overspeeding and drunk driving have frequently come up in our investigations," he told Citizen TV.Kibogong added that as much as there have been calls for the authority to consider putting in place speed bumps, the nature of the road does not allow for it."The Nairobi-Nakuru-Eldoret highway is a class A road that is very busy. Putting speed bumps may not be very necessary in as much as they are very effective," he said.His sentiments comes in the wake of Sunday morning tragedy in which twelve travellers perished after a tragic road accident at the infamous Salgaa.
