Increased road carnage in Athi River town and its environs has been blamed on human error and negligence by motorists and road users.
Speaking to HiviSasa.com in Athi River on Saturday, James Ondari, a financial adviser at a Nairobi-based Insurance Company said many motorists plying the routes in the region were careless and negligent hence the high rate of road accidents.
Ondari lamented that despite the reduction in cases of road accidents especially along Nairobi-Mombasa and Nairobi-Namanga Highways, the cases are still alarming.
“Motorists tend to be more careful on bad roads; they drive responsibly to protect their vehicles from damage as a result of ragged terrains," said Ondari.
He claimed that motorists plying most of the roads within Machakos County speed because the roads are smooth and well-lit.
The advisor, who is privy to motor insurance against accidents, said most of those who cause accidents on the roads were young men and women majority of who try to show of their driving prowess when drunk late in the evening or at night.
Ondari urged motorists and all road users to be careful and responsible while on the roads to avoid unnecessary fatalities resulting from avoidable road accidents.
