A human rights lobby in Mombasa has called for the resignation of Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet.
Speaking to journalists in Mombasa on Tuesday, Executive Director of Beyond Legal Defense Fund for human Rights Mr Nyaminde Boniface, said Boinnet should hang his boots over failing to deliver his duties.
Nyamide cited a case in Mumias where General Service Unit (GSU) officers are said to have used excessive force after being deployed to the region to recover seven G3 rifles that were stolen by a gang who broke into Booker police station.
Nyaminde termed the actions of the security personnel as a serious violation of human rights.
“Boinnet is abetting human rights violations by sending his men to terrorize and even kill unarmed civilians in the name of searching for a stolen rifle. This is simply impunity at its best,” he said, as quoted by Baraka FM.
Nyaminde questioned why only one police officer was left to man a whole police post with seven guns and 84 rounds of ammunitions.
He challenged police officers to work with the community to end crime.
“Police should be cooperating with people to offer information instead of treating them with contempt every time an unfortunate incident involving security forces arises,” he said.
