Speaking at a forum where they were applying for the cards on Saturday, residents said lack of identity cards was a real problem that should be solved urgently to enable them register as voters.

Jane Wambui said she had not gotten an identity card due to delays at the local registration office.

"Every time I go to collect my identity card,I am told to wait and now it’s over six months and still waiting," said Wambui.

Joseph Maina lauded the initiative and urged the government to assist those organising similar forums to help solve the crisis.

"The government should take this issue as a crisis and come to our aid. Most of us will not vote unless we get identify cards."

Apart from those applying for an identity card for the first time, there were many cases seeking replacements.

"My house burnt down with all my documents and I don't know how to apply for a new one until a neighbour brought me here," said Martha Wanjiku who is 60 years old.

There were also numerous cases of those who applied but the identity cards came with wrong names.

The event held at Herisquare Resort in was organised by Mt Kenya Music & Art Group in conjunction with the Registrar's office. James Kamau popularly known as Sir James who is the group's spokesman said they were overwhelmed by the high number of people who turned out.

"We issued two thousand forms in the morning and we had to look for some more as people kept streaming in. We felt the need to organise this forum to assist many who have no identity cards," he added.

The group will organise such forums in 11 counties including in Nairobi.

Musician Epha Maina urged people to come out in large numbers and take advantage of the forums.

He said those who were attended the forum will collect their identity cards on April 9 at the same venue when another forum will be held.
