Hundreds of youth working in cash wash companies in Garissa County have been affected after the government closed them down.

The youths who have protested the move by the county government said they will lose their jobs if the water firms are closed.

Mohamud Ahmed, one of the youths who was working at a car wash said through washing cars he has been able to earn money to pay for his school fees.

“The car wash firms have helped many youths to earn a living. The government should not close them down because they are benefiting hundreds of youth through job creation,” said Mr. Ahmed.

Garissa Water and Sewerage Company (GAWASCO) closed the car wash firms after they were found to have been running illegally because they had tapped water illegally.

The car wash owners have also protested the decision by the county government to close down their premises saying they are operating legally.

Led by Ahmed Abdullahi, the businessmen said they have incurred huge losses adding that most of them had borrowed loans to set up their premises.

Mr. Abdullahi further said that the more than thirty carwash owners have employed hundreds of people in the county who now risk losing their jobs.

“GAWASCO just decided to close down our business without any notice or reason for their actions. The closure will affect many people who are employed with the companies,” said Mr. Abdullahi.
