At least 600 buffaloes will be moved from Lake Nakuru National Park to Tsavo East and West Parks starting next month, senior Warden Dickson Ritan has said.
Ritan says that an assessment and logistics for the planned translocation is complete.
He said that the park can only accommodate between 700-1000 buffaloes but the number has risen to 4,500 in the past two years.
“Plans to translocate at least 600 buffaloes to Tsavo parks is complete. The move will help create space in the park,” he said.
Ritan observed that the increased number of herbivores has interfered with the ecosystem and led to rising cases of buffaloes straying.
He added that the translocation will make it easier to monitor and restrain the buffaloes in the park.
At the same time, the warden indicated that the park is under threat following invasion of weeds such as Sodom Apple and Lantana Camara which he said are reducing grazing land.
Ritan indicated that the invasion of the weeds has seen animals stray and in the process, leading to human-wildlife conflict.
