Kibera residents travelling upcountry for the Christmas holidays remained stranded at the Kibera Bus Station for the better part of the day Thursday.

Those stranded failed to secure bus tickets to travel home and join family and friends for the December festivities.

Most buses that park at the Kibera Bus station at the slum were fully booked.

Some travelers had to return home and try their luck on Friday.

Residents of Nairobi are travelling upcountry for the December festivities.

Most bus companies have increased travel fares with some doubling the the expenditure for acquiring travel tickets.

Moses Makokha, who comes from Western Kenya said he has been waiting to travel since Tuesday this week but has always found the buses full.

"It seems people started booking long time ago because I always come here only to find the vehicles full," said Mr Makokha.

Moses Okinyi said he intended to board Mbukinya Bus which operates from Kibera to Kisumu but has not been lucky since the buses were already fully booked.

"This is unusual," he said.

"I had relaxed thinking I will easily get the bus but it has surprised me that there is no space," said Mr Okinyi.

"Some residents have decided to go to the usually congested Country Bus Station where there are more buses but they are also waiting for a longer periods before they get space in the buses," added Okinyi.
