Several people took advantage of a no-cost medical clinic offered on Wednesday at the Uzima University College in Kisumu.
Majority of the patients do not have health insurance and the free eye clinic was an opportunity to receive medical care.
John Nyapiedho who traveled from Bondo in the neighbouring Siaya County said it just shows that somebody is thinking about people who are less fortunate.
“We have many people who are less fortunate like me and cannot afford the huge cost of treating vision. I am happy for this team,” he said.
Nyapiedho is one of several people who showed up at the university seeking vision services, which was organised by the Hindu Council of Kenya in conjunction with the university.
More than ten medical professionals volunteered their time for the eye camp, which was also supported by several banks and well-wishers including Ogra Foundation.
Uzima University College Deputy Principal in charge of Administration, Finance and Planning Omulo Okal said several patients were given free eye glasses.
Mr Okal said those with complicated cases were transferred to Sabatia Eye Hospital for specialised treatment.
“We put proper arrangements to ensure that those patients with complicated cases were transferred to Sabatia in Western region,” he said.
He said the eye camp turn out shows how many people in the region are without insurance or are under-insured and underscores how important it is to provide those people with basic medical care.
