There are fears of an imminent drought in most parts of Eastern region of Kenya.
Mavoko sub-county deputy agriculture officer Hoseah Swanya said the 30 degree Celsius temperature that the area is experiencing is worrying.
Swanya noted that a number of families from the sub-county have already been reported to be experiencing hunger due to abject poverty.
He said the free seeds donated to farmers by the Machakos County government last year gave low yields than expected due to hostile weather.
According to Swanya, the national government might be forced to provide residents with relief food.
He urged the county government to invest heavily in drilling dams for irrigation to support massive crop and animal production in the area.
Swanya said his office is committed to do everything possible to ensure that Mavoko residents do not suffer much when the feared hunger strikes.
He called on the residents living along River Athi to make good use of the water by irrigating their land.
