Several hunger stricken families in Garissa County are appealing for humanitarian organizations to urgently offer them relief food and water, lest they perish in the severe drought that is currently being witnessed in the region.
The families which have been hard hit by starvation and thirst as a result of the prolonged drought say their livestock have started dying and the surviving can hardly help them with even milk.
The few water points that used to offer the locals water have dried up due to the vagaries of the current dry spell, leaving them with nothing but a bleak future.
Mohamed Ahmed, who lives in Skansa village, Modogashe sub-county, told this writer that several households in the area are already counting massive loses after losing their herds in the ravaging drought that is getting worse by each sunrise.
Ahmed said the current situation in the county is of grave concern, since hundreds of herds are on the verge of dying.
He also pointed out that locals are staring at water-borne diseases since the little available water in the water sources are extremely salty and unfit for domestic use.
"If people consume the salty water they complain of diarrhea and when also used for cooking the foods get badly cooked," he said.
