Samuel Kamau, the owner of the house that collapsed in Nairobi’s Huruma estate today June 7, appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Joyce Ngandani where he and 5 others were charged with 52 counts of manslaughter.
Kamau was arrested on May 1, 2016 when he presented himself at Pangani Police Station for interrogation, days after the Huruma building collapsed. The court heard that he committed the offense jointly with others on April 29, 2016 at Ngei II Estate in Starehe sub-county, Nairobi.
As a result of the hostility he's facing from the families of the deceased, the prosecution has applied to have him remanded in custody until the court secures evidence from witnesses.
Prosecutor Catherine Mwaniki noted that manslaughter offense carries a life sentence on conviction.
Kamau however, was the only one present when the charges were read out.
