Just a day after the completion of Huruma rescue mission at the scene of collapsed building, the rescue mission is now headed to the Nairobi River.
In a statement released by the National Disaster Management Unit led by Pius Masai, nineteen people are still missing ten days after the unfortunate tragedy. The rescue team has now swung into action at the Nairobi River with the hope of recovering and accounting for the missing persons.
According to Masai, their move to get into the river was prompted and necessitated by concerns from families who are yet to trace their loved ones. It is speculated that the missing individuals may have drowned into the river.
The river mission is being undertaken by volunteers from the Red Cross and the government Disaster Management department.
Michael Ayabei, the regional Red Cross manager, Nairobi has urged families to report to the relevant authorities once they trace their loved ones for accountability purposes.
The tragedy scene at the collapsed Huruma building was on Sunday opened to the public after ten days of tight security surveillance by the National Youth service and the police. So far, the death toll has reached 51 as per records from the Kenya Red cross.
