Water hyacinth at Lake Victoria is currently on its old stage, rotting, affecting water production.

This is according to Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company Managing Director David Onyango.

He said rotting and sinking of the weed, making water in the lake to produce bad smell and colour.

Onyango said the company had been greatly affected in terms of production of water supply because the raw water they receive was contaminated.

“We have to incur extra costs in production of water which has increased by 30 per cent,’' he said.

The MD further said the occasional shutdowns of the plant is  due to poor water quality of raw water.

“Consequently, the total amount of water produced per day by 50 per cent due to occasional shutdown of the company Dunga Treatment plant,” he said.

Onyango said half of Kisumu town was affected including major customers in Milimani and Central Business District.

Other affected areas include Nyamasaria, Nyalenda, Kaloleni, Shauri Moyo, Patel Flats and Industrial Area.

"The company currently has stepped up production in Kajulu which abstracts water from River Kibos as an alternative treatment plant to cater for the shortfall,'' he said.
