Veteran Ugandan leader Yoweri Museveni insists that he is not a 'servant' to Ugandans but a 'freedom fighter'.
Museveni has also challenged Ugandans to fight for their freedoms without necessarily depending on his input, reports Daily Monitor.
The Ugandan leader was addressing thousands of National Resistance Movement (NRM) during its 31st anniversary since taking over leadership.
"I have heard some people saying that I am your servant. I cannot be your servant because I am a freedom fighter. I live and cherish the ideals of fighting for myself," he said.
Museveni added: "You cannot sit back and wait for some other people to fight on your behalf. Nobody chose me to serve you because I am a fighter on my own."
Museveni, a former army general, has been subjected to criticism in the recent past based on his treatment towards critics of his government.
He has been a close ally of President Uhuru Kenyatta who took over leadership in 2013.
