A 19-year-old woman who admitted to charges of possessing and selling illicit brew told a Nakuru court that she was in the business to raise college fees.
Rachel Ayuma, who appeared before principal magistrate John Mwaniki, said she was forced to brew and sell chang’aa in order to raise college fees after she scored a B- in her secondary examinations.
She further told court that she was learning to brew at her aunt's place in Nakuru in order to raise fees for Chuka University College where she anticipates to join next month. Ayuma said she wants to pursue a course in education after she sat her KCSE last year at Sulumeti Girls secondary school in Lugari.
“I was forced to brew chang’aa to raise fees because my parents back home in Lugari cannot afford to pay college fees and I want to continue with education," she told the court.
Ayuma said she is waiting for an admission letter from the institution. She faced four counts of manufacturing, possessing, and selling unlicensed brew.
The accused was found with 20 litres of kangara and five litres of chang’aa in Nakuru's London estate on Sunday during a hunt for illicit brews.
Mwaniki ordered for a probation report to be done to ascertain her claims and warned her that if she lied to court, she will face dire consequences as per the law.
The case will be mentioned on Thursday when the probation officer is expected to table a report in court.
