Awiti said that he is still in the gubernatorial race and rubbished claims that he was considering deputising the incumbent, Hassan Joho.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, the legislator maintained that he was firmly in the race and was keen to capture the governorship.

"I would like to assure my supporters and affirm my resolve to contest the seat of Mombasa governor in the 2017 general elections," he said.

"I take great exceptions to the falsehood that there have been some negotiations to form a political pact that would see me become a running mate. Those who hang on to these lies are daydreaming because I am going all the way to the ballot," he added.

The MP further said his agenda of uniting the people of Mombasa cannot be achieved by playing second fiddle.

“If there is any pairing between myself and any other candidate then let him or her be my running mate,” said Awiti.
