Mbugua announced that he had seen it prudent to pull out of the race and support the Jubilee candidate.

The move came after President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto reportedly held a closed door meeting with the governor. The move has however elicited quiet political duel with Mbugua's supporters blaming the Deputy President.

Mbugua's staunch supporters claim their candidate was coerced to step down.

Joe Ngugi, one of Mbugua's supporters and a close ally who was in charge of his campaigns, said he cannot back Lee Kinyajui.

"Voting Lee is voting the man who is reason my candidate was forced to step down. I will not legitimize the politics of intimidation and arm twisting," he said.
