A Hivisasa.com contributor based in Thika was among those who graduated at Kenyatta University this year.
Cate Makena is a writer who recently joined the industry graduated with a Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication. She has been a resourceful writer who focuses on human interest stories.
Makena says she never thought writing was fun as she had come to notice. She added that initially she had always hated writing until the time she joined the Kenya News Agency (KNA) for her internship where news writing was mandatory.
“I had never liked writing and the first month at KNA was really hectic. I later learnt how to phrase a story such that my editor could understand what I really meant. I realised that the media industry is all about writing and I embarked on it,” said Makena.
She added that the graduation was one of the best days in her life as she would be very pleased to get an opportunity to work as an editor in a print media institution.
Having experienced the pen, Makena said that writing is power and reading itself is powerful. She urged Kenyans to have a reading culture and to also support journalists in their daily operations.
I have been writing for Hivisasa for almost three months now and I hope to build my writing skills even further in the course of my writing,” added Makena.
The graduation was held at Kenyatta university graduation square where the First Lady Margaret Kenyatta was also awarded an honorary degree.
