Nairobi senator Mike Sonko has dismissed claims that he wastes his senatorial salary on a flashy lifestyle.

Speaking on Citizen TV's Jeff Koinange Live show on Wednesday, the senator said that unlike what is in the public domain, he earns a salary of Sh1 000 only every month and that this does not leave him room to waste money.

He said that he bought the Nairobi Rescue Team vehicles and equipment on loan and therefore the banks deduct nearly all his salary to repay the loans.

"I have acquired fire engines on loan. I have acquired ambulances on loan. (I have acquired) hearses to transport dead bodies to different parts of Kenya from Nairobi on loan," he said.

"I have been earning a salary of one thousand bob for the last five years because I have attached my salary (to repay loans)," he added.

The senator will be locking horns with ODM's Evans Kidero in the Nairobi gubernatorial race during the August elections.
