Chief Justice David Maraga has responded to claims that the Judiciary was favouring Nasa coalition.
In a swift response after the president’s claim, Maraga said at no time had he asked the IEBC not to proceed with ballot printing, saying his earlier remarks had been taken out of context.
“We in the judiciary are open to constructive engagement, including being criticized. However, when political leaders cast aspersions on the administration of justice based on a misrepresentation of my statement, it has the potential to impair public confidence in our courts and this concerns me a great deal,” he said in a statement.
Maraga’s sentiments were triggered by President Kenyatta’s remarks in Baringo, where President Kenyatta insisted that the August 8 polls will not be postponed under any circumstances.
President Kenyatta insisted that it was not right to have the presidential ballot papers halted, while the rest of the papers were printed.
However, in a quick rejoinder, NASA coalition through the alliance’s Chief Executive Officer Norman Magaya said they were only interested in ensuring a credible election.
“It is not for the president to decide for the judges and by extension the judiciary ho courts should run their business,” he said.
“Our position remains the same. We will do everything to ensure the country has a credible election come August 8,” he added.
This debate might take a different angle today, Monday, as the IEBC intends to meet all the presidential candidates to discuss on the matter.
