Deputy President William Ruto has said the government is determined to resettle all those who were displaced during the 2007/2008 post-election violence (PEV).
Speaking for the first time after termination of his case at the International Criminal Court (ICC), the DP noted that the IDPs have been patient since 2008, and the government will proceed with various phases of resettlement.
“I have not forgotten the victims of post-election violence who suffered unimaginable trauma. We are determined and we will not tire until the resettlement is concluded,” he said while addressing the nation in his Karen office.
The DP also said Kenyans must learn from the PEV, and it should never happen again for the sake of unity and development of the nation.
“The events of 2007-2008 stand as the cruellest chapter in our history as an independent country. I pray that no other Kenyan or human being ever falls victim to the sort of ordeal we have endured,” he said.
Ruto also thanked his supporters and Kenyans, who he said believed in his innocence over charges of crimes against humanity he faced at ICC.
Ruto and former radio broadcaster Joshua Sang were set free by The Hague based court on Tuesday, April 5, after Trial Chamber judges ruled that there was rampant witness intimidation and political interference with the case.
