President Uhuru Kenyatta believes his government has done ‘extremely’ well in promoting development in the larger Gusii region that any of the previous governments.
The Jubilee government has been under immense criticism from a section of Gusii residents who blames it for stagnated growth in agriculture and infrastructural development.
But in a pre-recorded interview with Egesa FM, the head of state said his government had allocated billions of shillings meant for over 400 Km roads in the region apart from its commitment to improving the coffee and tea sectors.
”As president, I am guided by the constitution and I work across the board whether people voted for me or not. This is one nation and I try as much as possible to ensure there is balancing on development,” he said.
“For instance, we have initiated over 400 Km of roads in Kisii and Nyamira, facelifted their respective county hospitals and we are working with the counties to ensure tea and coffee farming prospers. I have never ignored that region,” he added.
He said the region was also a major beneficiary of rural electrification and defended state appointments allocated to the region.
“From records and I challenge Abagusii community to prove me wrong, my government has ensured connection of electricity to many homes compared to past regimes. The same thing is happening to our schools,” he said.
“It’s also important to note that we have 42 tribes which also require the same treatment. State opponents have to be fair to all regions with Kisii included," said Uhuru.
"I know that the region voted for our brothers in Cord but that doesn’t mean we don’t work here because this is one country,” Uhuru added when asked about state appointments.
