Kisumu Deputy Governor Ruth Odinga now wants her security enhanced after suspected robbers raided her home in Nyahera estate on Wednesday night.
The suspected robbers are reported to have stolen electronics and other household goods. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, police said.
Addressing the press at her home on Thursday, Odinga said she was at her other home in Milimani estate at the time of the break-in.
The deputy Governor said two Administration Police officers who used to guard the home were withdrawn in 2013.
"I was entitled to two guards at the home who were withdrawn four years ago, and my efforts to have them replaced have been futile," said Odinga as quoted by the Nation.
Odinga, who is eyeing the Kisumu County governorship in the August polls, added that she currently has only one bodyguard.
"He is the only one and when he is off duty, I have none though I'm a woman leader," she said.
She asked the authorities to provide her with more security personnel, adding that she could not rule out politics as a motive for the raid.
"I am appealing to the authorities to enhance my security," she added.
Nyanza Regional AP commander Joseph Keitany told the Nation that Odinga is not entitled to guards at her home.
