A woman in Kirinyaga County has confessed to police that she sacrificed her 8-year old son to the devil.
The woman has been in police custody from Tuesday after she was arrested for allegedly strangling her son on Monday night and offering him as a sacrifice.
She then took the body to Karatina Hospital mortuary where she told attendants he had died after falling sick.
Area police boss Mohammed Huka said the woman made the confession when she was being questioned at Baricho Police Station on Thursday.
“She told us she is a member of a cult that worships the devil and when commanded to sacrifice a member of her family, she chose her son,” said Huka.
He added: “She claimed she had no option.”
Huka said once the police have established whether the woman, who lived quietly in the village, is of sound mind or not, she will be arraigned in court.
“Murder charges will be preferred against the woman once we are through with investigations,” he said.
As news of the alleged human sacrifice spread, villagers demonstrated and threatened to lynch the woman. They demanded that the woman should never return to the village.
