Uasin Gishu Imams and Muslim Preachers of Kenya (IMPK) chairman Abubakar Bini has supported a section of Jubilee MPs proposing a referendum dubbed “Boresha Katiba” to amend the constitution.

Speaking outside his office on Friday, Bini said the move by the MPs is on point since the new constitution was in dire need of amendments.

“Almost 20 percent of the Kenyan Constitution is not Wanjiku friendly. I support the move by the MPs only if they will make it better to suit common mwananchi interest and not their own,” he said.

He said the constitution has many inequities for examples the president has no power to fire his own cabinet ministers.

“Before any amendment is done they should seek public opinion through public participation where the public will be allowed to express their views,” he said.

Bini, however, urged the MPs to merge Boresha Katiba and Okoa Referendum to reduce the of amendment.

This comes after part of Jubilee MPs led by Narok North Gideon Konchelah proposed a referendum that will increase devolved funds to 46 percent, having cabinet secretaries appointed from parliament, increasing allocations to CDF, creation of a Ward Development Fund (WDF) and devolution of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
