Kenya's Supreme Court has upheld the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta, removing the last hurdle to his swearing in.

Reading the verdict, Justice Maraga threw out the petitions that sought to invalidate the October 26 rerun, saying that they were without merit.

NASA principal Raila Odinga has issued a statement in the wake of the ruling, dismissing it as one delivered under state pressure.

''It was a statement issued under duress. We do not condemn the court. We sympathise with it.'' The statement read.

Suburbs in Nairobi considered to be NASA strongholds have been plunged into running battles between opposition supporters and the police.

Opposition legislators had threatened to swear in Raila Odinga if Uhuru is sworn in as president.

The Supreme Court ruling is unlikely to bring the political uncertainty in the country to an end.

Opposition supporters will be waiting for direction from Odinga.
