FGM was outlawed by the government of Kenya but has been widely practiced by a section of people from Gusii community despite government efforts to curb it.

Speaking on Sunday during a fundraiser at Nyakemincha Catholic, Chae condemned the practice and urged residents to ‘accept the new reality’ and move on.

“I will never tire saying FGM is a bad practice that endangers the lives of our young girls. It brings complications during birth and I will always use these kinds of platforms to inform those who are not ready to accept the new dawn,” she said.

“As your MP, I request those people of good will to join me in disseminating knowledge to those who are not ready to drop this primitive practice. It doesn’t have a meaning and therefore, we should not keep on repeating the same mistakes that our parents did,” she added.

She also urged parents lecture their sons so that they accept girls who had not gone through the ‘cut’ for marriage.

“As parents, we also need to tell our sons that they need to accept girls who had not gone through the cut because in the past they were subjected to discrimination. The male child must also be made aware of the transformation in the society. I will continue advocating for abolishing of FGM through sensitization of my people,” she said.
