Speaking in an interview during Al Jazeera's Head to Head programme, Raila told the host Mehdi Hasan that he would have more important things to do as President than arresting gay people.

"As President of Kenya I would have important things to do. The answer as to whether I would arrest gay couples is no," said Raila who had at first tried to avoid answering the question directly.

He insisted that though gay relationships were un-African and illegal in Kenya, his presidency would not have problems with gay people.

Raila was also put to task over his year 2008 claims that Obama's father was his maternal uncle and President Obama his cousin.

"I didn't say President Obama is my cousin or his father was my uncle. What I said is that I come from the same clan as Obama's father. I didn't say we have any blood relations. I was misquoted," said Raila in the interview that aired on Friday, Saturday and Monday.
