Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichun’gwa has responded to government spokesman Eric Kiraithe concerning his press briefing on May 30 to bar Cord supporters from using Uhuru Park during the Madaraka Day.
Speaking during a weekly Baraza held at Gikambura, Ichun’gwa said that it was the best decision to ban CORD and Prayer Beyond Boundaries Ministries from using the premises on that day.
“It was a wise decision that neither the parties who had reserved the premises will be permitted to use the grounds on that historic day,” he said.
According to the statement given by Kiraithe, both parties are requested to organize their activities accordingly.
He also said that the Nyayo Stadium shall remain closed on Wednesday and only Pumwani Secondary School will be allowed to host such gatherings.
The lawmaker condemned CORD supporters for denying the religious group an opportunity to lead Kenyans in peaceful prayers for the country.
“The National Security Advisory Committee has convened to evaluate the security threats emanating from a double booking of the grounds and that will bring peace on Wednesday,” he added.
On Wednesday, Kenya will be marking 53 years of internal self-rule, and according to Ichun’gwa, it is a day for national pride and patriotism and no rallies should be held on the same day.
Initially, the Nairobi County government had agreed with CORD supporters to have their rallies but it was outlawed by the Security Council two days later.
