Kikuyu member of parliament Kimani Ichung'wa has said there is need to empower women through leadership training and capacity building so as to boost their economic development and grant them financial independence.
Speaking during a Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organisation (MYWO) leadership training programme in Kikuyu Town on Wednesday, Ichung'wa noted that women are the backbone of the society and they should be constantly trained on basic leadership and business skills so as to boost their self-confidence and have them empowered economically.
He emphasised the county government’s commitment towards raising the status of women, adding that they have been previously sidelined in leadership and through the training, they will acquire skills that will enable them take up leadership roles.
“Kiambu County government is dedicated to empowering women through various groups like Maendeleo ya Wanawake organisation and I want to encourage all of you to steer development initiatives at the grassroots so that women can acquire financial independence,” he said.
The law maker further said that the constitution had put in place provisions to ensure women and the girl child rights are safeguarded and encouraged them to apply for loans at financial institutions and the Uwezo Fund so as to start small scale businesses that will boost them financially.
