The Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kiamni wa Ichungwa has called upon the County government of Kiambu to provide farmers with seeds saying that the ones he disbursed were not enough and the county government should consider assisting in the same..
Speaking on Thursady in his constituency, Ichungwa urged Kiambu Agriculture executive member Monicah Waiganjo to consider ensuring that the seeds are provided early enough for the planting season before the rains begin.
“The County government should provide Kikuyu people with seeds in preparation for the planting season as the residents have already cleared their farms so that immediately the rains begin they start planting,” said Kimani.
The legislator further stated by doing so, the government will help avoid a condition of hunger crisis if the support will reach the farmers on good time as they are in the risk of being hit by hunger and drought.
“If the government acts now, the families who have not prepared their farms due to lack of money to purchase the seeds will get encouraged and clear them as soon as possible,” he added.
These comes at a time when leaders and residents of semi-arid parts of Kiambu County have been faced with hunger, pleading with the government for relief food which have been disbursed to several regions.
This follows low rainfall experienced in the region during the December rainy season, which led to low or no harvest in many regions of the County.
