Onyango asked Kibera residents who applied for the national IDs to visit the centre and verify the status of their applications.

Speaking to the press on Thursday evening, the county registrar said 2500 identification cards are lying idle at registration centre.

He said the increase of people applying for ID cards this year has surged from 25,000 to 32,000 due to the 2017 general election next year.

“We have received more ID applicants this year compared to last year. This increase can be attributed to the next year’s general election and also the governments’ campaign to reach all those who have not applied for the crucial document,” Otieno said.

Otieno emphasised the importance of the IDs saying youth and women cannot open bank accounts or joint self-groups without the national IDs.

He reiterated that the youths ought to use the IDs to access state funds meant for youths apart from using it to elect leaders of their choice.

The County registrar urged Kibera leaders and the public opinion leaders to highlight the importance of possessing national identification card and where to register.

“Our local leaders and the public opinion leaders should emphasise to the locals the reasons for having national IDs and how to acquire them,” Otieno said.
