The identity card registration campaign launched by Rosemary Odinga is gaining momentum in Kibera with residents coming out in numbers to utilise the opportunity while it lasts.

On Wednesday, the campaign was taken to Sarang’ombe ward where residents gathered at the area chief’s camp to have them registered as Kenyan citizens.

The registration process started at 9am and attracted many people with majority of them being the youth. The campaign organiser, David Odera insisted that the campaign is meant to bring the services closer to the people.

“We want the residents at the grassroots level to have ID cards because we have realised that without the document, they live without freedom on their own land. We are therefore mobilising the Kibera people in every village and its going on well,” said David Odera during an interview on Wednesday at Sarang’ombe location chief’s camp.

Odera also clarified that the campaign is not politically oriented.

“This campaign has nothing to do with politics or opposition. Every Kenyan has a right to have an ID and that is why it is the responsibility of the government to issue it. The process is conducted by government officers in collaboration with the civil society who mobilise the people on the same,” said Odera.
