The five were ‘arrested’ and taken to the chief’s camp by concerned parents to explain why they had absconded school despite the free primary education.

According to the chief, the children were held till their parents reported to the camp to explain circumstances that had led to the serious violation of school rules.

“A good Samaritan cornered five pupils who I can confirm are pupils of Riamoni primary school and subjected them to the camp. I had to reach their parents who distanced themselves from the offence,” he said.

“We had to cane them so that they will in future obey the rules by attending all lessons because it is essential,” he said.

Mr Rasugu urged parents and teachers to take responsibility and ensure children benefited from the free primary education given by the government besides asking teachers to mark registers to reduce absenteeism in classes.

“This is purely a parental and institution affair. Teachers and parents must ensure that they take responsibility by ensuring young ones attend schools. It is also mandatory that teachers take roll calls to avert such silly incidents,” he said.
