Internally displaced persons in Naivasha have appealed for government support in the provision of school structures and writing materials.
According to Joseph Irungu from Vumilia Narok IDP camp, students are being forced to study in makeshift classes and in the sun.
“We do not have any classes. We have to improvise desks and benches by using wood cuttings, which are barely enough. When it rains, our children cannot attend schools which eventually affect their overall performance,” he added
Virginia Wangari cited that they do not have any reading or writing materials, urging the government to at least provide those basic needs.
“Our children do not have any text books to refer to or anywhere to write on. We are appealing to the Constituency Development Funds to come to our aid,” she added
At Jikaze IDP camp, the teachers appealed to the government to fund them so that they can go back to school, with the teachers noting that they are inadequately trained to handle the high pupil intake that they receive each year.
According to the school secretary, Mercy Wanjiru, they have raised the issue with the Ministry of Education on different occasions but to no avail
Approximately 350 students attend the makeshift class that is located inside the camp, with majority being from nursery school to class three.
The teachers, who are six in number, say that none has been trained professionally to teach the pupils; hence the quality of education that they are getting is not of standards.
