Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from Nyamira County have slammed President Uhuru Kenyatta following their failed attempt to meet him on Wednesday.
President Kenyatta who was on a one day visit to the county and failed to address the matter conclusively.
He only mentioned IDPs following a shout from a dissatisfied member of the public.
The group led by Evans Ondeto accused the President of deliberately ignoring them despite their grave concern.
“It’s so sad that we can try hard to meet him only to be blocked. We have a genuine concern and it’s disappointing that the top leadership couldn’t spare five minutes to address a matter of grave concern,” he said.
“We do not have homes, we are living in abject poverty yet thousands of people have been compensated from other parts of the country. The government has betrayed us and the President must know that this cannot be taken for granted. We were displaced from our homes in 2008,” he added.
Their concerns were backed by North Mugirango MP Charles Geni who called for immediate intervention from the State.
“I have talked about them in several occasions including Parliament. People who were in charge of the President’s trip blocked us from securing a meeting with the him. Time has come for these people to be given their right,” Geni said.
Ondeto said plans were in progress to pitch camp outside the county commissioner’s office to seek redress of the matter.
